Hey friends!
Okay, can we talk about something real for a minute? In all my years of doing this photography thing, I’ve noticed that people hold back on asking certain questions. They’ll text me or call, and I can literally hear the hesitation in their voice before they ask something they think might be “silly” or “obvious.”
And honestly? It breaks my heart a little bit because there are NO silly questions when it comes to your photo session. None. Zero. Zilch.
So today, I’m going to answer all those questions you might be too embarrassed to ask. Consider this your safe space, friends.
“What if I need to use the bathroom during our session?”
Girl (or guy), just tell me! Seriously. We’re usually outside for 60-90 minutes, and nature calls when nature calls. I’d much rather you be comfortable than trying to hold it and looking miserable in your photos. Plus, I always know where the nearest gas station or restaurant is. We’ll take a quick break, grab some water, and get right back to it.
Your comfort matters more than getting through the session five minutes faster.
“Can I bring snacks for my kids?”
YES. Please do. In fact, I encourage it! Hungry kids are cranky kids, and cranky kids don’t want to smile for the camera (shocking, I know). Bring the goldfish crackers, the juice boxes, the fruit snacks – whatever keeps them happy. Just maybe avoid anything super messy or stain-prone right before we start shooting.
I’ve photographed enough families to know that sometimes a well-timed snack is the difference between magical photos and a meltdown.
“What if I sweat a lot?”
Friend, I’m right there with you. Do you know how much I sweat lugging around 20 pounds of camera gear in 90-degree heat? It’s a LOT. Bring some blotting papers or tissues, and we’ll take breaks when you need them. I always have a little fan in my car if you need to cool off.
Also, I’m really good at catching moments between the sweaty ones, and I promise you won’t look like you just ran a marathon in your final photos.
“Can I reschedule if I break out the day before?”
Listen, I get it. You’ve been planning this session, you’re excited about it, and then BAM – your skin decides to throw a party on your face. Here’s the thing: I can work with it. Between angles, lighting, and editing, I promise that pimple won’t be the star of your photos.
But if it’s really bothering you and affecting your confidence, we can talk about rescheduling. Your comfort and confidence matter more than sticking to a date on the calendar.
“What if my kids won’t cooperate?”
Oh honey, I’ve seen it ALL. The kid who refuses to smile. The toddler who only wants to run away from the camera. The teenager who acts like this is actual torture. I’ve got tricks, I’ve got patience, and I’ve got realistic expectations.
Sometimes the best photos happen when kids are just being themselves – even if “themselves” means a little chaos. Trust me on this one.
“Can my dog be in the photos even though he’s not well-trained?”
Absolutely! Your dog is part of your family, and I love including pets. Are they going to sit perfectly still and look at the camera on command? Maybe not. But some of the sweetest photos I’ve ever taken include a dog doing something goofy or a cat trying to escape.
Just give me a heads up so I know to expect some extra chaos (the fun kind).
“What if I cry during the session?”
Then you cry, friend. I’ve had moms cry during family sessions because they’re overwhelmed with love for their kids. I’ve had seniors cry because they’re emotional about graduating. I’ve had couples cry during engagement sessions because they’re just so happy.
Tears are part of life, and if they happen during your session, that’s okay. I’ll give you a minute, hand you a tissue, and we’ll keep going when you’re ready. Some of the most beautiful photos I’ve taken have been right after someone cried – there’s something so raw and real about those moments.
“Can I change my outfit halfway through?”
Yes! In fact, I often suggest it for longer sessions. It gives us variety in your photos and gives you a chance to show different sides of your personality. Just let me know ahead of time so we can plan for it.
“What if I don’t know how to pose?”
Friend, that’s literally my job. I’m going to guide you through everything. I’ll tell you where to put your hands, how to angle your body, where to look. You don’t need to come in knowing how to pose like a professional model.
All you need to do is show up and trust me. I’ve got you.
“What if I’m bigger than the people in your portfolio?”
Okay, this one makes me sad because I hear it more often than you’d think. Here’s the truth: I photograph people of ALL sizes, and every single person is beautiful. Every. Single. One.
I know how to angle, how to light, and how to capture you in a way that makes you feel confident and beautiful. Your size doesn’t determine whether you deserve beautiful photos. You deserve them, period.
“Can I see the photos before I decide which ones to order?”
Absolutely! That’s how I do things. After our session, I’ll upload a proof gallery for you to look through. You’ll have time to go through them, show them to family, and decide which ones you want to order. No pressure, no rush.
“What if I hate all the photos?”
In all my years of doing this, this has never happened. But if you’re genuinely unhappy with your photos, we’ll talk about it. Maybe we need to do a reshoot, maybe we need to edit differently, or maybe we just need to look at them together and find the ones that work.
Your satisfaction matters to me, and we’ll figure it out together.
“Is it okay if I’m on my period during the session?”
Yes, of course! Just wear what makes you comfortable, bring whatever you need, and let me know if you need extra breaks. We’ll work around it, no problem.
“Can I bring my best friend for moral support?”
Please do! Having someone there who makes you laugh and helps you relax can make such a difference. Just make sure they’re okay with potentially being in a few photos too – sometimes I’ll grab a candid of you two laughing together, and those end up being favorites.
Here’s the Bottom Line
There is literally nothing you can ask me that will make me think less of you or judge you. Nothing. I’ve been doing this long enough to have heard it all, seen it all, and worked through it all.
Your session is about YOU – your comfort, your happiness, your memories. If something is on your mind, ask me. If you’re worried about something, tell me. If you need something, speak up.
I promise you, whatever question you have, I’ve probably been asked before. And if I haven’t, well, there’s a first time for everything, and I’m here for it.
The only “silly” question is the one you don’t ask because you’re too embarrassed. So please, ask away. Text me, call me, message me on Facebook – whatever works for you. I’m here to make this experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
Because at the end of the day, these photos are about capturing real moments with real people – and real people have questions, concerns, and needs. That’s not just okay; it’s perfectly normal.
So bring your questions, bring your concerns, and bring yourself exactly as you are. I can’t wait to work with you.
What questions do you have that I didn’t cover here? Drop them in the comments or send me a message – I’d love to hear from you!
Until next time, Alisha The Camera Lady 📸
