Behind the Scenes of December Photo Sessions
December is a whirlwind for photographers, and honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way. There’s something extra special about capturing families, kids, and couples when the world outside is sparkling with holiday lights and everyone’s feeling a little more joyful (and maybe a little more chaotic!).
The Prep: Setting the Stage for Holiday Memories
Every session starts with a vision—sometimes it’s a family’s favorite tradition, sometimes it’s just the hope for one good photo where everyone’s looking at the camera! I spend extra time in December prepping the studio and scouting outdoor spots. Cozy blankets, twinkle lights, and a stash of hot cocoa packets are always on hand. I want families to feel at home, not like they’re in a stuffy studio.

Little Moments, Big Memories
The magic isn’t in the perfect pose—it’s in the in-between moments. Like the way a toddler’s eyes light up when they see a string of lights, or the laughter that erupts when someone wears the Santa hat backwards. I always encourage families to bring a favorite ornament, a holiday book, or even their dog. Those personal touches make the photos truly theirs.
Working With Winter Light (and Weather!)
Indiana Decembers can be unpredictable—frosty mornings, surprise flurries, or the occasional sunny afternoon. I love using that soft winter light for outdoor sessions, but I’m always ready to pivot. Huddleston House is my go-to backup for indoor coziness, and I keep sessions short and sweet to keep everyone comfortable.
Keeping Kids (and Grown-Ups) Happy
Snacks, music, and a little patience go a long way. I’ve learned to embrace the chaos—if a kid wants to show off their new holiday pajamas or a family bursts into a snowball fight, I’m there for it. Those real, unscripted moments are what families remember most.
Why December Photos Matter
The holidays come and go so fast. I love giving families the chance to slow down, be together, and make a memory they can hold onto for years. It’s not about perfection—it’s about connection, laughter, and a little bit of holiday magic.
If you’re thinking of booking a session, or just want to chat about ideas for next year, my door (and inbox) is always open. Here’s to capturing the moments that matter most—messy, joyful, and completely yours.
